Cooking Tips For Rice To Cook Perfectly At Home

Rice is a staple food in many countries and if you have visited any such place, you might be aware of the fact that they cook perfectly fluffy rice. Many people try to cook the rice perfectly but either it gets too soggy or mushy. There are different types of rice like white rice and brown rice. Different types of rice need different temperature settings and water ratio to cook perfectly. If you want to be a pro at cooking rice, you can follow the cooking tips for rice.

Tips For Cooking White Rice

If you use long-grain white rice that is highly polished and refined then you should follow these cooking tips for rice. White rice doesn’t need to be washed before cooking. However, you can wash it with normal water to remove impurities and dust for a few moments. Rice washing helps to remove extra starch as well.

After washing, you should use rice and water in a 2:1 ratio. Boil 2 cups of water in a small saucepan. You can add some salt as per taste. Add 1 cup of rice and stir for a few seconds for breaking the clumps of rice and cover with a lid. Make sure that heat is not at the highest level because in this case, the bottom section of rice will scorch while the upper section of rice will still be undercooked. The lowest heat setting will help to cook rice perfectly.

Leave it on the low flame for 20 minutes. After that, you will get perfectly cooked rice. You should lift the lid and see at least once while cooking because sometimes the rice dries too but there is ample moisture in the pot. When 20 minutes are over, turn off the burner. But don’t open the lid instantly; let the rice as it is for 5 minutes because steam also works to plump the rice. After 5 minutes, use a fork for separating the grains. Now, your fluff rice is ready for serving.     

Cooking Tips For Rice In The Oven

The first thing that you need to do is to set your oven to 370 F. If you use white rice then you should follow these cooking tips for rice.

For Brown Rice

Take 1.5 cups of water per cup of rice. Use 1.75 cups of water for brown rice. Then boil the water on the stove. You can add some quantity of butter and a teaspoon of salt. After boiling the water, add rice and tightly cover the pan and put it into the oven.  

Let the brown rice in for at least an hour and set the timer to 25 minutes for white rice. Check the rice and make sure that it is tender. Also, ensure that there is no water in the pan and it is not mushy. If this happens then let the rice in for another 2-4 minutes in the oven. You should never check the rice while it is in the oven.

Once the rice is cooked, you should use a fork to out the steam. This is important because steam continuously cooks the rice and after some time rice will get sticky.  


If your rice becomes mushy or sticky after cooking, it might be overcooked or you poured more than required water. You can follow the above-discussed tips to make well-cooked rice.
